What Criteria is Used to Select Courses for SI?
Criteria:
The following criteria are used to determine the priority in which courses receive SI support through the Wingspan: Center for Learning and Writing Support. Courses must meet at least Criterion 1 to be considered:
- Courses with high rates of D, F, or withdrawal grades (“DFW rates”) based on data collected from the University of Kansas Visual Analytics platform.
- Courses with moderate to large enrollment (typically 100+ students).
- Gateway courses (prerequisites for future coursework) that are critical to degree progression.
Review of SI Support:
SI support for a course is periodically reviewed to ensure effectiveness and alignment with program goals.
Factors considered include:
- Student attendance and engagement in SI sessions
- Collaboration between faculty and SI leaders
- Historical course outcomes and academic support needs
- SI leader availability and effectiveness
- Significant changes in course format or structure
Faculty will be notified if SI support is discontinued or modified based on these criteria. For more details on review criteria, please see the Supplemental Instruction (SI) Course Support Guidelines document
